Sri Lanka is a land rich in heritage, with a history that spans nearly 3,000 years. It is home to some of the world’s most ancient cities, including Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and Digamadulla. The remains of these once-thriving civilizations — from grand palaces and sacred temples to monasteries, hospitals, and theatres — are beautifully carved in stone and now rest quietly among the island’s lush landscapes and mountains.

Among these historic wonders, Anuradhapura stands out as the most iconic. It served as Sri Lanka’s third capital and remains one of the longest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Deeply sacred to Buddhists, it was the center of political and cultural life from the 4th century BC until the 11th century. Archaeological findings suggest its origins go back even further, possibly to the 10th century BC. Over time, repeated South Indian invasions led to its decline, and the city was eventually abandoned until its rediscovery in the early 19th century.

Polonnaruwa, the island’s second ancient kingdom, rose to prominence as a political hub around the 9th century. The kingdom is especially known for its advanced irrigation systems, many of which are still in use today. Although its period of glory was relatively brief, Polonnaruwa remains one of Sri Lanka’s most well-preserved archaeological sites, reflecting the organization and brilliance of its early rulers.

Digamadulla, located in the eastern region, played a vital role as both an agricultural and spiritual center during the Anuradhapura era. Governed by a royal representative, it flourished with impressive palaces, monasteries, and temples. However, compared to other ancient cities, it has received less archaeological attention. As a result, many of its treasures have been lost over time, while others still lie hidden within the forests of Eastern Sri Lanka, waiting to be discovered.

Often described as a treasure of nature and history, Sri Lanka is home to one of the world’s oldest civilizations. With over 2,500 years of recorded history, the island showcases planned cities, majestic palaces, vast reservoirs, sacred temples, and remarkable works of art. These achievements reflect the advanced lifestyle and vision of ancient Sri Lankan kingdoms. Today, Sri Lanka continues to captivate visitors as one of the most beautiful and culturally rich destinations in the world.
